What Is Baby Colic?

Colic, also known as crying from 0-3 months of age and being inconsolable, is a condition that doctors still can't figure out. There are many theories on what causes colic, such as excessive gas in the stomach, milk allergy, or lactose intolerance. It seems to run in families with parents who have colicky babies tending to have colicky babies themselves.

One of the most common questions that parents ask is what to do for colicky babies.

The answer to this question depends on the cause of colic and the age of the baby. For example, if a baby is colicky because he or she has a cow's milk protein allergy, then it can be treated by switching to formula.

If it is caused by gas, then it can be treated with simethicone (Gas-X) or gripe water. If the baby has reflux, then they may need medication like Zantac or Prilosec.
